Each team plays each of the other teams in the group once, with three points awarded for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat.

The final tournament group stage is played according to the schedule below. The last two matches in each group must both kick off at the same time. The first-named team is considered as the home team for administrative purposes.

On completion of the final tournament group stage, final group standings are compiled based on the number of points obtained by each team in the group. The six group winners, the six runners-up and the four best third-placed teams qualify for the round of 16.
