As a rule, a player or team official sent off by the referee is automatically suspended for the next match in the competition. In the event of a serious offence, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment, including by extending it to other competitions.
Players and team officials who receive multiple yellow cards across separate matches are suspended for the next competition match after the third yellow card, and then after any subsequent odd-numbered yellow card (i.e. fifth, seventh, etc.).
Exceptionally, all yellow cards expire on completion of the quarter-finals. They are not carried forward to the semi-finals.
After a club's elimination, yellow cards and pending yellow-card suspensions expire and are not carried forward.
A pending red-card suspension that cannot be served during the current competition is carried forward to the next UEFA club competition match(es) for which the player would be otherwise eligible.
