Applicants for Schengen visas are required to submit:

  • a completed and signed visa application form (a separate form is required for each traveller, even if they are travelling under the same travel document; visa applications for children under the age of 18 must be signed by a parent or guardian);

  • a valid passport with at least two empty pages, issued within the last ten years and valid for at least three months after the date on which the applicant intends to leave the Schengen area (or, in the case of multiple journeys, the date on which the applicant intends to leave for the final time);

  • a recent photograph that complies with the standards laid down by the International Civil Aviation Organization; proof of payment of the visa fee;

  • proof of travel insurance covering emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation (including in the event of death), with minimum cover of €30,000, valid for the entire Schengen area and the full duration of the stay;

  • documents confirming the purpose of travel, the necessary means of subsistence and a confirmed accommodation for the duration of the stay;

  • information enabling the assessment of the applicant’s intention to leave the territory of the Member States of the Schengen Area before the expiry of the requested visa;

  • fingerprints, collected when the applicant submits their application in countries where the EU Visa Information System is operational (exemptions exist for specific categories of applicants);

  • proof of payment of the service fee if the applicant is requested to submit their application through a third-party service provider.

Applications must, in principle, be submitted to the relevant embassy or consulate at least 15 days, but no more than six months, before the start of the intended journey.

As a rule, once a Schengen visa application has been submitted, a decision is taken within 15 calendar days. This may be extended to 45 days if a more detailed examination of the application and/or additional documentation is required.
