Staff members can be required to work on the public holidays but working time on public holidays may not exceed the maximum working time of 10 hours. Furthermore, a staff must be provided with a day-in-lieu within 8 weeks of the public holiday.

The following public holidays in Germany must be taken into account:

  • 1 Apr Easter Monday

  • 1 May Labour Day

  • 9 May Ascension Day

  • 19 May Whit Sunday (Berlin)

  • 20 May Whit Monday

  • 30 May Corpus Christi (Stuttgart, Munich, Frankfurt, Köln, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Gelsenkirchen)
