Ordinary working hours must not exceed:
40 hours per week (standard rule under Arbeidsmiljøloven),
or 38 hours per week for shift workers in certain conditions,
or 36 hours per week for night workers or workers under especially hazardous conditions.
When overtime is used, the absolute maximum is:
48 hours per week,
calculated over a 7‑day period.
Weekly average working hours (including overtime) must respect longer reference periods defined by Norwegian national law or collective agreements.
